I wouldn't normally do something like this, but I really need some advice.

I had to come home from work today. Again. And today I was worse than I have been in quite a while. Since coming home from New Zealand I've been a lot worse (for those of you that are new to this show, I have depression, diagnosed almost a year ago and was given Prozac) - I think its got something to do with missing my friends, stuff with UK people, and finishing with my counsellor - a few things coming at once. I'm not sure how much the counselling helped (although I think it was less rather than more), and I don't think the medication is working so well anymore. But either way, I'm going to go to my GP about it.

What I need advice with is: work are saying that my job is in jeapordy because of my absense, and I have to have a formal meeting about it. So, any advice on what I can do to not get fired? And does anyone have any advice on how to deal with my down periods a little better? Because going on the way I am at the moment isn't really an option.

:new: date has been set for my meeting - its a week on saturday. I have my appointment with my GP for tomorrow morning, although its not with my regular GP so I'm not sure if they'll be able to change my medication or write me a letter for my meeting or anything :hmm: But they will be able to provide proof that I have what I say I have

It's only a concerns meeting - Every company has one of these in place. It's just a meeting to verify why you've been absent, and any measures both you, and the company, can take to prevent it happening so much in the future. It's nothing to worry about and you'll be fine

If they're saying its a disciplinary, then it could go down on your work record and is a bit more serious. They need to actually SAY its a disciplinary though, and give you formal notification by letter for it to be legal.

You're already going to your GP about your depression, I suggest getting a doctors note backing up your statement - They cannot argue with medical proof.

If you really need the time off work, get your doctor to sign you off sick for a week or so. Time off makes all the difference and can help you get your shit together, and then you can go back to work all fresh and good :aww:

Also... Exercise helps, I've found. Even just going for a walk around on your lunch break helps! Running is really good, I always feel great after a run [if not a little achy... But hey, a gorgeous hot bubble bath or shower followed by a pampering session soon fixes that ;p]

`dxd says booze helps - But he's an idiot.

Thanks for your reassurance  And I will get that doctors note, and proof that I am getting treated.

I'm not sure time off work is going to do me good - I think I need more time at work to keep me occupied. At the moment I work 4 hours saturday, and 4 hours sunday, so if I don't get any extra during the week it can be a bit of a shock to the system. But they're reluctant to give me extra hours while I can't even do my contract :hmm:

Keeping yourself occupied does help. It is easy to be occupied at work, but it is also important to be occupied on your days off from work. There is any number of things you can do: grab your camera and go for a walk doing some street or nature photography, walk around a market or mall, do some crafts at home, etc. Anything that stimulates your mind is good, not only does it keep you occupied, but it keeps you sharp too.

xxbcxx is correct on they exercise too. It gets your chemical levels up, I think (not an expert here) your adrenalin and dopamine levels. I believe a lot of depression stems from inactivity. I know that I'm less down in the dumps when I am more active.

A good nights sleep is also important to. Low energy levels tend to have a negative affect on my mood.

As far as the job question, I had a similar meeting once for being late a few times. I was going to college and working part-time during the semester and full-time during the breaks. Work always started at 6am. Basically, the workload was destroying me during this particular semester with 17-21 hour days of work and school. They ended up making me take a week off. Your situation seems a bit different, so I'm not sure I can properly comment on it. I hope all goes well.
I would recommend that you contact the Citizen’s Advice Bureaux. They should be able to tell you where you stand with regard to employment law. Take copies of your contract and any other terms and conditions that your employer has given you. In the meeting, be honest with your employers and explain your situation. Are you sure that you want this job? Is it contributing to your depression? Would you be better off working somewhere else?

I wish I could be more help. My dad had depression for years and my closest friend has it, and still I have no answers or advice to give you. Yes, exercise helps some people and doing things that give you a sense of satisfaction can help too.

I hope things work out for you.
